Spring has returned and we mark the renewal of life as the flowers sprout up from the ground, the leaves begin to fill the once barren tree branches, and the sun returns to its highest point in the sky. We can observe and celebrate this type of renewal in our lives.

One way to do that is by practicing gratitude. Gratitude is showing your appreciation for someone or something. By incorporating gratitude exercises into your daily life, you can transform your thinking. Shifting your thoughts of negativity and despair to feelings of confidence and resiliency.

If you suffer from anxiety, gratitude is a great way to combat those feelings. Since anxiety results from your thoughts being too far in the future, it disconnects you from your current state of being. Resulting in increased feelings of hopelessness, as if nothing goes right in your life. Living in the motto of, “If only I could….”

This disconnection from the present allows despair and negative self-talk (those statements or thoughts we say to ourselves that saddens our mood) to permeate in our minds. An expression of gratitude re-establishes your connection to the present. It does this by forcing you to think about something in your current life (present state of being) you are thankful for. By changing your motto to, “I am grateful for….” you allow yourself to experience a renewed sense of hopefulness. And we all know that hope is what saved the world from Pandora’s box.

By affirming out loud daily, at least one thing you are grateful for, you will be able to acknowledge the growth you have made. Take some time during this season to express your gratitude and share in the renewal of happiness.

Here are five easy ways to express gratitude:

1. Write a thank you letter to someone.

2. Do something unexpected for someone.

3. Make a list of things you are grateful for.

4. Call someone and tell them you appreciate them.

5. Say thank you.
